I am writing as your constituent to urge you to oppose efforts to cut SNAP and child nutrition programs. Lawmakers must protect vital food assistance that helps children, seniors, and working families put food on the table. 2.9 million New Yorkers use SNAP to help buy groceries. 30% of New York’s SNAP participants are children, and 31% are seniors or people with disabilities. SNAP is proven to reduce hunger, lift children out of poverty, and reduce healthcare costs. It also helps children connect with other vital food resources, including school meals, WIC, and Summer EBT. SNAP is also an important revenue source for more than 17,000 retailers in New York. Every $1 in SNAP benefits generates up to $1.80 in economic impact during economic downturns. SNAP brings more than $650 million into New York’s local economies each month, supporting jobs and economic growth in our agriculture and retail industries. Families are already struggling to make ends meet, and lawmakers have pledged to help. Cutting SNAP benefits or restricting eligibility does the opposite, jeopardizing food access and our economic security. I urge you to reject any cuts or harmful proposals that would limit the reach or adequacy of SNAP benefits, and instead take actions that support food security for all New Yorkers.
