Celebrate New York CACFP Week
November 1-5

The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) helps afterschool programs and child care providers serve healthy meals and snacks to children in their care, supporting kids’ learning and development. CACFP has played an especially critical role during COVID-19, as more families with children struggle with food insecurity, and as students and schools work to recover from disrupted learning.

This New York CACFP Week, please join us in thanking CACFP providers for their work to nourish New York’s children, and help us spread the word to expand access to this valuable program. Visit AfterschoolMealsNY.org and ChildCareMealsNY.org to learn more and access outreach resources.

  • Post on social media. Share your program’s success story, tag your local CACFP champions, and/or use one of these sample posts:

    • It's #CACFPweekNY! Now more than ever, #CACFP is a critical support for kids, families & providers. Learn how more schools, #afterschool programs, and #childcare providers can join to receive reimbursement funding for healthy food: ChildCareMealsNY.org #CACFPweekNY
    • This #CACFPWeekNY and always, we are grateful for NY’s CCR&Rs, #childcare providers, #afterschool programs, and other #CACFP champions. Thank you for your vital work to nourish NY's children. Learn more about CACFP, including how more providers can join: ChildCareMealsNY.org
    • #CACFP helps #childcare and #afterschool providers pay for healthy meals & snacks. In NY, thousands of providers participate, but many more could! Learn more: ChildCareMealsNY.org #CACFPweekNY
  • Learn about CACFP during COVID-19, and how we can reach more kids as we build back. The Food Research and Action Center’s recent Afterschool Nutrition Report and CACFP During COVID-19 brief show how CACFP has continued to be a valuable support for many children, families, and providers amid COVID-19. Still, there is substantial room for growth in the program in NY. Even before the pandemic further disrupted access, only about half of our state’s child care providers participated in CACFP, and only 6 out of every 100 low-income children had access to CACFP’s afterschool meals component.

As we build back, more providers can join CACFP to bolster their programs and alleviate food insecurity. There has never been a better time to get started, as key waivers have extended eligibility for afterschool meals to all areas of the state, and increased reimbursements for day care home providers. Help us spread the word about these and other benefits of CACFP to encourage more schools, afterschool programs, and child care providers to participate. Visit ChildCareMealsNY.org or email Krista.Hesdorfer@HungerSolutionsNY.org for additional information and resources.

  • Advocate for needed investments to strengthen child nutrition programs. CACFP is one of several federal nutrition programs that work together to help ensure kids have consistent access to the healthy food they need to thrive. Congress has a critical opportunity to strengthen these programs through the Build Back Better Act, which includes historic investments to expand access to school meals and summer nutrition. Join us in urging New York’s delegation to maintain these key child nutrition provisions and quickly pass the Build Back Better Act.

We must act now. The House of Representatives is preparing for a vote as soon as Tuesday, November 2nd. Click here to learn more and take action.

What comes next? Click here to learn about Child Nutrition Reauthorization, the next key opportunity to strengthen CACFP and other child nutrition programs.
