Impacts of a Government Shutdown on Federal Nutrition Programs in New York

In the event of a federal government shutdown beginning December 21, 2024:

  • SNAP operations will not be affected in December or January. SNAP benefits will be issued normally, and participants can continue to use their EBT benefit cards. Applications for SNAP will be accepted and processed in December and January without interruption. Additional updates will be available on the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance website.

  • WIC operations in New York will not be immediately affected. WIC-approved stores will continue to accept WIC benefits, and local agencies can continue to serve all applicants and participants. Additional updates will be available on the NYS Department of Health WIC website.

  • We do not anticipate immediate impacts on other federal child nutrition programs, including school meals, Summer EBT, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program.

Please share this information with your networks to help ensure New Yorkers have timely and accurate information about these vital nutrition programs.
