Webinar: Back to School Nutrition - Bounce Back Better in the 21-22 SY
Wednesday, August 18th, 10-11am

Join Hunger Solutions New York and No Kid Hungry New York to learn about some key strategies to bounce back better and build financial resilience in your school nutrition program. With students returning to school buildings and waivers that allow all schools to offer free meals to all, schools have a unique opportunity to expand access to their meal programs, especially school breakfast. Also learn about diversifying your revenue with new opportunities to feed children during after school enrichment.

How Can We Help? Take Our Back-to-School Survey

There have been many changes and challenges to school food service in the past 18 months. To help us better understand food service and how we can best support you in the 2021-2022 school year, No Kid Hungry New York has put together this short survey. Your responses will help our team plan resources, webinars, individualized technical assistance, and more to support your work in the coming school year. As an added incentive, all who complete the survey by midnight on August 11, 2021, will be entered in a drawing for a gift card. Take the survey here.

There's Still Time to Apply for CEP

The deadline to apply for CEP for the 2021-2022 school year is September 30. While many schools are planning to offer free meals to all through the SSO waivers, electing CEP this school year can ensure your students are able to receive other benefits, like P-EBT. Furthermore, electing CEP earlier may help ease the transition back to NSLP/SBP in the 2022-2023 school year. Below are resources to help get you started:

ICYMI: Preparing to Operate Under New Waivers in the 21-22 SY

Resources are available to assist school meal operators with the implementation of current USDA waivers that allow schools to provide free meals to all students. The following resources are great for school districts looking for additional guidance and who have questions about waivers available for the upcoming school year:

  • Updated USDA Guidance: The USDA has released an updated Q&A for the upcoming school year.
  • NYSED Hosted Webinar on SSO Waivers in the 21-22 SY: NYSED has posted a recording of the “2021-2022 School Year Operations Election Seamless Summer Option (SSO) & USDA Waivers” webinar.

Additional Resources for School Nutrition Programs

The past year has shown how important school meals are to meeting students’ needs. Not only do meals support students’ health and academic achievement, they foster community and connection after a challenging year. Help your students learn and re-engage in the 2021-2022 school year by taking advantage of waiver flexibilities and planning your school nutrition operations to ensure that all kids get the food they need. As an added bonus, maximizing the reach of your operations can help your school nutrition department recover financially from the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. No Kid Hungry New York has released the following new resources to assist schools:

Afterschool Meals

Afterschool programs are a critical part of COVID-19 recovery, and providing healthy afterschool meals helps make the most of them. If your school currently serves afterschool snacks, consider switching to complete meals through the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) to ensure kids are fully nourished and ready to focus and engage. Serving complete meals bolsters your nutrition programs, too; CACFP’s afterschool component reimburses $3.66 per meal or $1.00 per snack served to youth in eligible programs. For the 21-22 school year, this program remains available in all areas of the state, with additional flexibilities to allow safe meal service.

P-EBT Outreach Resources

Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) provides food benefits to free and reduced-price eligible children whose in-person attendance was reduced due to COVID-19. Schools play a vital role in connecting families with benefits by providing data to help identify eligible students. Families may already be reaching out to ask their schools if and when their family will receive P-EBT benefits. Hunger Solutions New York’s P-EBT webpage can provide your families with helpful information about P-EBT, including answers to frequently asked questions from families.

Summer Meals

As we prepare for the school year, many schools and community organizations are still hard at work ensuring kids are well-fed over the summer break and ready to return in the fall. With many summer meal sites operating through the end of August or early September, outreach to families remains key. Visit our summer meals outreach resources webpage for tools you can use to spread the word, including flyers, social media posts, and graphics like the one below.

We want to hear from you! Send us your summer meals photos (email us for a media release), stories, and best practices we can amplify to help sponsors and sites reach more kids this summer and beyond. Email Krista.Hesdorfer@HungerSolutionsNY.org.
