SNAP Network Update

SNAP October Eligibility and Budgeting Changes

With the start of each new federal fiscal year on October 1, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) adjusts the standards and deductions that determine the monthly benefit amount an eligible household will receive. In fiscal year 2024, SNAP maximum benefit amounts under USDA’s Thrifty Food Plan will increase. With this update, the maximum SNAP benefit, for example, will increase from $281 to $291 for a one-person household and from $939 to $973 for a four-person household.

Our SNAP October 1 Toolkit reflects these changes and provides resources to help community organizations that work with SNAP applicants. Toolkit resources include:

Although this increase will provide some relief from rising food prices, countless people are still left without adequate SNAP benefits. When the COVID-19 SNAP Emergency Allotments ended in March, many SNAP participants in New York experienced a hunger cliff after losing an average of $95 a month in benefits. This underscores the critical need for a strong Farm Bill that protects and strengthens SNAP.

New Poverty Data: Act Now to Protect and Strengthen SNAP in the Farm Bill

U.S. Census Bureau released Poverty in the United States: 2022 Report which includes estimates of poverty that help measure economic well-being in the United States. The report finds significant increases in overall poverty and child poverty in 2022 compared to 2021—increases that were largely driven by the expiration of pandemic relief programs. These findings provide an opportunity for advocates to urge lawmakers to protect and strengthen SNAP in the upcoming Farm Bill. With increasing numbers of children and families struggling to make ends meet, it's urgent that we fight to keep SNAP strong.

As poverty and hunger continue to rise in New York, please join us in advocating for a Farm Bill that protects and strengthens SNAP. Use ready-made captions and images in our social media toolkit and tag your elected representatives.

Additionally, the U.S. Child Poverty Action Group, First Focus on Children, and the Children's Defense Fund have organized a Twitterstorm on Wednesday, September 20 at 2pm ET to uplift this new data and take action to urge lawmakers to make the investments needed to #EndChildPoverty.
