It’s Time to Start Thinking About Summer Nutrition

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) allows kids and teens age 18 and under to access healthy meals at no cost throughout the summer months. Most sites are “open” sites, so there is no sign-up or paperwork required; kids can just drop by when meals are served.

Across the state, community groups, school districts, anti-hunger organizations, and the New York State Education Department (NYSED) are working in partnership to raise community awareness and increase site participation to expand access to summer meals. Last summer, nearly 450 schools and community organizations served free meals at thousands of sites across New York State.

Summer Meals Sponsor Webinar

Join our upcoming webinar, Sponsoring Summer Meals, on Tuesday, January 28 at 1 PM

Learn the basics of how summer meals work, strategies to reach more kids and teens, and resources to help grow the program as well as cross-promote Summer EBT. This webinar is for schools and community organizations interested in becoming summer meal sponsors.

Celebrating a Successful First Year of Summer EBT

In New York State, Summer 2024 was the first year of the new federal nutrition program, Summer EBT.  Eligible families receive benefits on an electronic benefit card—similar to a debit card—to purchase food. Summer EBT benefits can be used just like SNAP benefits to buy food at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other authorized retailers.

We thank all of the summer meals sponsors and sites who raised awareness of Summer EBT in 2024. We look forward to continued collaboration with the state, summer meal sponsors and sites, and others to expand the reach of this program in 2025 and beyond.
